CASEY HOUSE TORONTO

Casey House is Canada’s first and only stand-alone hospital for people with HIV/AIDS.  In 1988, the disease was stigmatized, and so were the people who lived with it.  Fear ran so deep that Casey House’s first patient was delivered to the door by a team of medics wearing hazmat suits.  He was greeted by Casey House with an embrace.  It was the first time he’d been touched in months.

Casey House is still one of the few places where people with HIV/AIDS can seek care without judgement.  More than a place that saves lives, it's a place that speaks up, shines understanding through compassion, and empowers clients to get better.

Located in the newly designed Casey House addition in downtown Toronto, architect Siamak Hariri of HPA in collaboration with AyA Kitchens designed this open kitchen space for the HIV/AIDS Specialty Hospital, to help families and patients dealing with AIDS. An accessible and user-friendly space that serves as a commercial kitchen with a residential look to help families feel more like home. The kitchen has contemporary aesthetic and features plenty of storage and large working areas. In AyA's Oyster finish, the space feels bright and spacious.
